As firms in general are demanded to acquire more social responsibilities to the society, i.e. beyond their legalobligations, large firms face a dilemma between standardization and customization of their CSR activities among countries where they have businesses. In one hand standardization is essential to minimize costs so companies can survive especially in a highly competitive market, and in the other hand there is no “one size fits all” as there are a growing evidence of the role of national characteristics in CSR activities. However, companies cannot afford to have CSR activities that do not contribute to their survival and, therefore, have to align those activities with their visions, missions and core businesses. In this context companies operating in Indonesia are in a great need of finding the right approach to their CSR strategy andCommunity Development (CD) comes into play. This approach to CSR has been seen by many as the most relevant to Indonesian business context at present as it offers an opportunity to companies to build the CSR into their businesses. Through two case studies presented in this thesis one can see how the CD approach will fit in companies’ CSR strategies and whichcomponents are essential to be present in the CD/CSR model to achieve a sustainable business environment.show moreshow less
